BSc (Hons) Multimedia Journalism

Katie's time at Teesside has led to her landing a role at Made TV.

I loved my course. I loved the fact it was very hands-on especially the News Days module. And I found that the teachers were very helpful throughout my studies.

What brought you to study at Teesside University?

I was introduced to the course by staff from my Higher National Diploma in Broadcast Journalism at Belfast Metropolitan College.

What was your course like?

I loved my course. I loved the fact it was very hands-on especially the News Days module. And I found that the teachers were very helpful throughout my studies.
I met so many friends, especially during my final major project which involved building a website focusing on an area of interest alongside a range of multimedia content. My group created the Girls Insight website which was primarily built on WordPress. I produced relevant multimedia content, written content targeting the appropriate audience, newsgathering, researching stories, proofreading, copywriting, presenting on camera, driving traffic to the website, using social media platforms, operating a camera, working in a professional TV studio, contacting relevant contributors and vox pop interviews. It was hard work but it certainly paid off as this project achieved a first-class mark.

What was your favourite module?

I thoroughly enjoyed every module but, if I had to choose, I would pick the content production module – News Days – where we explored ways to gather, communicate and disseminate news. We could choose to either work for radio, TV or print on a daily basis. I liked the variety and got the opportunity to present Teesside News for the University. The facilities at the University, including the TV studio, are amazing. It’s been great preparation for the broadcasting industry.

Did you do any work experience?

I was recognised with a University award for Video Journalist of the Year. I felt very privileged to be awarded this out of all the year groups studying my course. As part of the prize I had some work experience at Made in Tyne and Wear. I loved my time there and had valuable industry work experience.

What was your social life like?

You couldn't beat the Students' Union on a Friday night. I loved socialising on Southfield Road. And I was a member of the University gym – it was fantastic. I have also had a few trips to Whitby and it’s safe to say they offer the best fish and chips.

What have you done since graduating?

After graduating, I moved back home to Belfast, but was drawn back to the North East for work. I secured a job as a video journalist with Made in Tyne and Wear and Teesside TV. My days are so exciting – I never know what’s going to happen. I’m building up first-class industry experience working with Made TV and I am thoroughly enjoying it.
