Student Success

Student Success offer a comprehensive support package for students, collaborating and integrating with wider support services across Teesside University to promote best outcomes and to enhance the student experience.

The Student Success Team was created with the aim of delivering high-impact, data-driven interventions for individual students at most risk of disengagement. Through ongoing monitoring of data analytics, the team targets groups of high-risk students in need of support. Reactive interventions, consisting of a programme of bespoke 1:1 tutorials, are provided for students referred to the programme by Schools, or for students who have shown signs of significant disengagement through attendance and other data indicators.

A full staff of tutors with expertise in student engagement, academic writing, maths, and academic skills are in place to support students. Student Success also regularly develop and review proactive engagement measures, such as exam anxiety drop-ins, which are open to all students, serving to support student retention at Teesside University.

MERIT, the Maths Enhancement, Retention, and Improvement Team supplements the numeracy branch of the Student Success Team with a wider participation scope to adapt for student need. Bespoke 1-1 support is available for disengaged students, with MERIT also offering group support for students having difficulties with mathematical elements of their course, including drug calculations, SPSS and BKSB support.

A key part of Student Success, the Student Journey Team are in place to support all students and form part of the support network underpinning students' learning experience. Student Journey Team are dedicated to amplifying the student voice, ensuring students play a key role in shaping their own university journey. The team proactively gather, analyse and act on student feedback obtained through open communication, surveys such as the Students Transitions Entry Poll (STEP) survey, focus groups, and student representatives.

Additionally, Student Journey Team support Personal Tutor development and collaborate with course leaders and central services to provide a scaffolded approach to transition, belonging and engagement at Teesside. This includes providing a suite of offers such as induction support activities and 1-1 student support around navigating university systems and processes.
