James, a first year BA (Hons) Games Art student at Teesside University London, is one of three recipients to have been awarded a Here East scholarship this year.

Now in its fourth year of developing the next generation of talent in East London, the Here East scholarship programme awards prospective students with full scholarships to study at universities based at Here East.

James is one of just three students among the fourth cohort of scholars to benefit from the Here East Scholarship Programme, which was launched in 2021 to help dismantle barriers faced by young people accessing higher education.

The scholarships, which provide tuition fees and supporting loan supplements, are open to students across the London boroughs of Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets, and Waltham Forest.

James said: “I want to make my mum proud, as I will be the only one in my family to attend university. I will also be happy to prove all those wrong who told me I would not achieve anything due to being autistic.

“Achieving a degree and my goal will be a great boost to my confidence and allow me to do even better in life. I feel Teesside University London is the ideal university for me, as it has the course I want to succeed in career-wise. I am an avid gamer who has designed and created games at college and spends lots of time researching how to get into the gaming industry.”

Kathryn Elliott, Head of Partnerships and Business Development at Teesside University London, said: “We’re really pleased to see James receive this boost, which offers financial support, along with access to mentoring and work experience.

“We look forward to seeing James progress in his studies, as he works towards his aim of achieving a successful career in the gaming industry.”
