What do you most enjoy about teaching?

I love the dynamic and innovative learning environment at Teesside University London.
The opportunity to engage with a diverse student body, contribute to their academic and personal development and integrate cutting-edge research and industry practices into my teaching are some of the most fulfilling aspects of my role here.
I particularly appreciate the opportunity to teach within the block system, a modern approach to teaching and learning where a course is delivered over a six-week period, with two teaching days each week. This structure allows me ample time to focus on my research, ensuring that the teaching materials I provide are consistently updated and aligned with the latest academic advancements and industry trends.

How can your students benefit from your experience?

With extensive experience in academia and industry, my students benefit from a well-rounded perspective that blends theoretical knowledge with practical application.
I have a background in leadership, business management, business consultation and development economics which enables me to provide real-world insights, foster critical thinking and prepare students for the complexities of global business environments.

Tell us about your career to date

I have held various academic positions at several esteemed institutions in the UK, including Teesside University London, the University of Wales Trinity St David, and Glasgow Caledonian University, as well as other private higher education institutions. I have also served as a doctoral researcher at the University of Lisbon, School of Management and Economics, and as a researcher at the Centre for African and Development Studies in Portugal.
Throughout my academic journey, I have delivered a wide range of modules, including Business Management, International Business, Management Economics, Strategy and Sustainability, and Research Methods both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. I have also successfully supervised over 50 master’s dissertations and have provided mentorship to students in both their personal and career development.
In addition to my academic work, I am a co-founder of a consultancy firm based in the UK, where I oversee the educational consultancy branch of the company and have also held managerial positions in other companies in the UK.

I also actively engage in research, with publications in areas such as remittances, economic development, and international business strategy. My research contributions continue to advance the discourse in these critical areas of study.

What industry links can students benefit from?

I have strong connections with industry professionals, particularly through my involvement in business management and development economics modules enhancement. My role at Teesside University London has allowed me to bring in distinguished guest speakers from the industry (particularly from the United Nations, some marketing experts in the UK and Africa), enriching the learning experience for students. These industry links also provide valuable opportunities for student engagement and professional development.

How has your industry experience enhanced your teaching?

My industry experience specifically from consulting and management has significantly enhanced my teaching by enabling me to bring practical insights into the classroom. I can bridge the gap between theory and practice, using real-world examples to illustrate complex concepts. This approach not only makes the learning experience more engaging for students but also equips them with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their future careers.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

One of the highlights of my career has been when I achieved a 94% student satisfaction rate on the first module taught at the business school and successfully oversaw a cohort from 22 to 350 students. This experience demonstrated my ability to lead and innovate in an academic setting, fostering student success and enhancing the overall quality of the programme.

Why should students consider studying this course?

Students gain a comprehensive understanding of global business strategies, leadership and emerging issues in business and society. The course is designed to equip students with the skills needed to navigate the complexities of the global business landscape, with a strong emphasis on practical application, critical thinking, and responsible leadership. Additionally, the course benefits from industry connections, guest speakers, case study analysis and a diverse learning environment that prepares students for future success.

What is the best piece of advice you have for students?

The best piece of advice I have for my students is to embrace continuous learning and remain adaptable. In today’s rapidly changing world, staying curious, seeking new knowledge, and being open to change are essential for both personal and professional growth. Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself, take risks, and learn from your experiences.
