During the visit, the team observed the fabrication of nickel micromeshes, which are being tested as current collectors for Alkaline Sea-Water Electrolysis, a process that produces green hydrogen. The unique design and surface area of these micromeshes are crucial factors being studied to understand their impact on the efficiency and scalability of hydrogen production from seawater.
Hydrogen is regarded as a key clean energy source, but its sustainable production remains a challenge. Conventional methods often require costly desalination to remove salt from seawater, which can create harmful by-products. This project seeks to overcome these challenges by developing new materials that can produce hydrogen directly from seawater without desalination.
By optimising micromesh geometries, the team aims to enhance reaction rates, energy efficiency, and the overall practicality of seawater electrolysis. This breakthrough could lead to new ways of generating clean energy without using freshwater resources.
The collaboration between Teesside University, Durham University, and The Expanded Metal Company is part of broader efforts to drive green energy innovation in the Tees Valley region. If successful, the project could attract investment and create new jobs, further supporting the local economy.
