You develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to perform evidence-based medicine and clinical research, which is relevant to all specialist areas of practice. It also enhances your commitment to lifelong learning, encouraging you to develop an inquisitive approach to clinical practice.
We take a flexible approach to course delivery. You can take this one-year course either by attending classes, by distance learning (no attendance required) or by flexible learning (a combination of some attendance and some distance learning). On successful completion of this award you can choose to progress onto an MCh or Mres.

Year 1 core modules
Data management in Clinical Research
You gain knowledge in statistical analysis for basic clinical and medical data, from the fundamentals to multivariate analysis.
Develop the knowledge and skills you need to design and manage primary or secondary research, audit or evaluation project relevant to your practice, preparing you for dissertation. You also cover research governance and ethics, to prepare you to apply for ethical approval or release.
You are assessed through a written 4,000-word proposal for a research, audit or evaluation study, which is worth 100% of the module marks and should be submitted in week 13.
Introduction to Research, Ethics and Governance
You gain an understanding of ethical clinical research, exploring the concept of clinical governance and the importance of evidence. Examine data and basic analysis techniques, helping you to complete further advanced modules. You also explore the concept of mastery and studying at level 7, working with students from different courses to enable cross profession discussion and learning.

How you learn
You can choose to study this course on-campus, online or flexibly (a combination of attendance and online).
You learn through lectures, seminars, group discussions, computer lab work and practical activities. Your personal tutor, course leader, module leaders and dissertation supervisor support you throughout.
How you are assessed
You are assessed through essays, proposals, and an oral and poster presentation.
Entry requirements
You should have a relevant degree at 2.2 level or above.
International applicants are required to have IELTS level 7 or above (or equivalent) with no component scoring below 6.5.
Applicants with non-standard entry requirements are considered on an individual basis.
