I am delighted to introduce the Equality and Diversity Report for 2023-24.
Teesside University is committed to equality of opportunity in a diverse learning and working environment and aims to be a caring, fair and supportive institution which seeks to continually enhance the experience of our staff, students, partners and the communities we serve. This approach underpins our University vision and mission.
Equality, diversity and inclusion are embedded in all our work which is underpinned by the University's values and behaviours and reinforced by a specific value; that of embracing diversity and actively opposing prejudice.
Teesside University is committed to equality of opportunity in a diverse learning and working environment.
We believe that education has the power to transform lives and economies. We are proud of our diverse University community and are fully committed to providing an environment where all our staff and students are supported to fulfil their potential irrespective of their background.
This year's report shows that we have much to be proud of and summarises the progress we have made against our new Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Action Plan 2024-26, detailing the activities and achievements that are helping us to meet our equality objectives.
EDI has become increasingly embedded in our University community and this has been recognised externally in what has been an exceptional year. We were ranked 8th in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index, were Public Sector winners in the BME Achievement Awards and at the LGBT Alliance Awards we received the award for Providing a Safer Learning Environment for LGBT Students and Staff. These awards demonstrate that we have created a learning and working culture where every individual can feel a sense of belonging.
I would particularly like to recognise the work of our equality focus groups, who have taken forward a range of initiatives and events this year, and helped us provide more opportunities for the staff voice, supported at a senior level by our Executive Champions.
