Knowledge Exchange Framework 2021

The Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) provides a range of information on the knowledge exchange activities of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in England. ‘Knowledge exchange' is what we call the wide range of activities HEIs undertake with partners. You can use the KEF to explore data and explanations of the different ways they work with their external partners, from businesses to community groups, for the benefit of the economy and society.

The data, available on the KEF’s interactive and detailed new website, informs a series of metrics that look at the performance of English Higher Education Providers (HEPs) from a variety of different perspectives. These perspectives include public and community engagement, working with partners ranging from big businesses to small local firms, and how they commercialise their research.

This data shows the rich contributions English HEPs make, both economically and socially, on both local and national levels. The knowledge exchange that underpins the KEF will help promote cooperation and drive continuous improvement in the higher education sector. The results below are for Knowledge Exchange Framework 2021, 135 HEPs participated, 117 provided detailed narrative.

  • In the top 10% of 135 English Higher Education Providers for skills, enterprise and entrepreneurship development and support (Knowledge Exchange Framework 2021)
  • In the top 20% of 117 English Higher Education Providers for working with business (Knowledge Exchange Framework 2021)
