Why we are a GOLD university

We are rated GOLD overall

in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023, making us the top university in the North East of England for student experience and one of only 33 nationally to achieve a TEF gold rating overall. Gold is the highest possible award, recognising our excellence and outstanding delivery of student experience and student outcomes.

What does this mean and why is it important?

The TEF is a national scheme run by the Office for Students (OfS) that aims to encourage higher education providers to improve and deliver excellence in the areas that students care about the most: teaching, learning and achieving positive outcomes from their studies.

TEF Gold means that the student experience and outcomes that we deliver are typically outstanding.

The TEF assesses undergraduate courses and the outcomes apply for four years from September 2023. These state that:

  • our course content and delivery inspire and stretch our students to their fullest potential
  • we offer a range of outstanding quality academic support tailored to student needs
  • we provide learning resources that are tailored and used effectively to support outstanding teaching and learning
  • our teaching, assessment and feedback practices are very high quality
  • we are highly effective in supporting our students to succeed and progress beyond their studies
  • we are highly effective at supporting our students to achieve educational gains, particularly in relation to employability.
