Testimonials

Nathalia Thompson

I'm so grateful for everything that happened to me here at Teesside that I just feel that I want to give back.

I think it's important to leave a lasting legacy because we are talking about the future generation of scientists and engineers and nurses, I want them to be able to come to Teesside with the best resources, have a wonderful learning experience here, become the best version of themselves and go into the world and make a difference.

Nathalia Thompson, MSc Microbiology with Advanced Practice, 2023

Dr Alan Dowson

I feel very strongly about attachments, people like myself always look back to their origins and my connections and I need those attachments, they are parts of me and Middlesbrough is part of me.

I feel that any hardship for students now, that if you can afford a certain amount of money, a gift for hardship for students is useful for them.

Dr Alan Dowson, PhD in Sociology, 1997

Impact

The Majorie Hearnshaw Scholarships

James Douglas Hearnshaw was a member of our alumni community who believed passionately in the power of education. After a successful career in the Canadian shipbuilding industry, Douglas sadly passed away in 2011. In his will he made provision for a scholarship programme to be instituted and dedicated to his beloved wife, Marjorie.

The Marjorie Hearnshaw Scholarships provided over 36 students with financial support to help with their adjustment to university life and study.

Testimonials

The financial support the Marjorie Hearnshaw scholarship provided me with during my studies was of huge benefit, as it allowed me to fully focus my time on the course and really get the most out of my degree. Being selected for the scholarship was also a massive confidence boost, and motivated me to push myself even further.

Since finishing university I have joined McLaren Formula 1 Team as a graduate, where I have had the opportunity to work on some of the most advanced machines in the world and with the very latest engineering technology.

Ethan Young, BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering, 2023

This scholarship not only shaped my professional trajectory but also instilled a profound appreciation for the opportunities it opened up for me, and I am eager to inspire the next generation of students to pursue their dreams with similar support and dedication. Perhaps this is why my academic journey has naturally led me to a fulfilling career as a lecturer in Bioinformatics at Teesside University. Here, I continue to explore my passion for biology, while actively inspiring and supporting the next generation of scientists.

Lucy Butler, BSc Biological Sciences, 2019

Dawn Graham

I applied for the scholarship because it came as an opportunity and I was an eager fresh face coming into university. I just wrote the story of the education and school of my era as we didn't get the opportunities that are available today. Financially the money was going to help me through that first year as everyone knows it can be hard to make ends meet.

If someone was thinking of giving to the university to support a scholarship I would say it's a marvellous gift to give back and encourage somebody to support them through their university journey.

Dawn Graham, Accounting and Finance student
