Libby studied this course to find her niche area, before returning for her PhD and becoming a senior lecturer. She’s now a deputy head of STEM, and soon to become head of land-based higher education.
The laboratory equipment and quality of lecturers were exceptional.
Deputy head of STEM (higher education) at University Centre Leeds
I didn't have a clear idea on a specialism, and Teesside’s course offered a wide curriculum that allowed me to find my niche area. I studied part-time so I was able to work and study.
I loved the subject matter and the intellectual interactions with my peers and lecturers. I relished being a student representative and learning how the committees, policies and procedures worked. The laboratory equipment and quality of lecturers were exceptional.
I engaged in committees and represented students to the management team, which showed me the workings of higher education institutions. The lecturers mentored me and gave me further insights into policy and procedures which has helped me in my career and progression.
I’m the line manager for the programme managers and academic coach, and I provide leadership and management to maximise individual and team performance. I foster and actively promote a positive culture of wellbeing in the STEM department, and hold and record meetings with direct reports. I also take on a range of line management responsibilities, and support staff with operational development and managing learning programmes and curriculum development within the department.
I started a graduate tutor position at Teesside University which allowed me to complete my PhD in Microbiology while gaining a postgraduate teaching qualification. This led to a lecturing role, and with my research experience, I became a senior lecturer. After a productive year in this position, I gained the confidence to apply for my current role.
My experience at Teesside allowed me to secure a new role as head of land-based higher education at University Centre Askham Bryan, which I’ll be starting soon. I hope to continue working to widen student participation in higher education, which I experienced first-hand as a mature student at Teesside.
I wholeheartedly would. The experience, knowledge and patience of the lecturers created an atmosphere that fosters a supportive learning environment.
