Legal eagle Rauf is flying towards a new career

26 November 2001

After eight years of unemployment Abdul Rauf sought a change of direction, and enrolled for an access to Higher Education course at Longlands College, Middlesbrough. This gave Abdul, who likes to be known as Rauf, the confidence to enrol at the University of Teesside and study Law. Rauf has now graduated with an LLB (Hons) degree, been awarded the Sweet and Maxwell Prize for contribution to the course, and enrolled on a Masters degree at the University.

Rauf’s current academic success is a far cry from when he left Bertram Ramsey (now Brackenhoe) school in Middlesbrough 21 years ago, with no qualifications.

Rauf, 37, from Middlesbrough, said: “I mucked about at school and didn’t think about education. I only wanted to find work.”

Following school Rauf embarked on a series of jobs, including labouring, taxi driving in Middlesbrough and caring for his late mother. After a lengthy period of unemployment, Rauf decided to return to education.

He said: “I chose Law because it widens my career choices. The subject is enjoyable and has given me a lot of confidence. When I read articles I can understand the legal implications, such as rulings by the Law Lords. There was a good atmosphere on the course, you get to mix with people of all ages and the Lecturers are fantastic.”

The study bug has clearly bitten Rauf, as he has now enrolled on an MSc in Information Technology at Teesside. Rauf added: “When I finish this second degree I’m looking for a training contract with a firm of solicitors. I feel really pleased to have achieved this degree and the prize, my life has completely changed.”

Rauf’s partner Angela Brown shares his enthusiasm for learning, as she is set to enrol on a Consumer Law degree at the University next year.
