Danny’s tribute to Dad

18 November 2004

Danny Briggs suffered a tragedy before the start of his second year at the University of Teesside, when his father Floyd was killed in a car crash. Danny’s grief made him think about leaving his studies, but he persevered.

Now, two years later, he will graduate from the University today with a BSc (Hons) degree in Consumer Science & Consumer Law, and will also receive an academic prize, the Evening Gazette Award. In addition, Danny has recently started his a new post as a Trading Standards Officer with North Yorkshire County Council.

Danny, 27, from Hartlepool, was very close to his father. Danny said: “We were best mates, he was a mate and a Dad rolled into one and used to go to gym together. He was finding it hard to get work locally, and in August 2002 went for an interview in Wales, for a computer management post.”

Floyd, 55, was killed in a car crash when returning from Wales. Danny said: “I was destroyed when I found out, I went into a black hole. But I had to be practical and organise his funeral. Then I started to contemplate leaving the course, but I remembered Dad. He was very keen on me getting an education, he’d achieved computing degree as a mature student. It was difficult for me to settle back into my studies but the course tutors helped me to set goals and were fantastic with me.”

Danny’s determination has paid off, and this year he achieved a 2.1 degree. Danny said: “I wish Dad could have been here to see this, I’ve dedicated my degree to him. I’d like to believe he’s here, to give me a pat on the back about my success. My mum and partner Kirsty are coming to the graduation. I really enjoy my new post, there’s undercover work which is different and where anything can happen.”
