Citizenship Day

17 May 2005

The Fire Brigade, Police and guide dogs will all assemble at Middleton St. George CE (Aided) Primary School on Tuesday 17 May.  However, this gathering isn’t the result of an emergency.

The groups are meeting up to take part in a good citizenship event. The Citizenship day, held at Middleton St. George CE (Aided) Primary School, Middleton St. George, County Durham, will feature interactive presentations from the police, fire service, guide dog’s association and Sadberge dog’s home.  The event aims to explain the role of the emergency services by allowing children to actively take part and experience their work. The students are hopeful that the day will increase their understanding of vulnerable people in society and also make them more aware of animal welfare.

The event has been designed for over 65 children, aged 7 – 9 years old and will be managed by students on the BA (Hons) Leisure Management degree: Anna Pickles, 21, from Leeds; Stephanie Schneider, 23 from Bremen, Germany; Craig Vincent, 22, Richmond; and Daniel Hanafin, 21, Middleton St George.

Daniel Hanafin, who also attended Middleton St. George School as a child, said: “When we decided to base our event on helping children, Middleton St George was the obvious choice.  It's nice to give back to the school where I have many happy memories.”
