Free lecture explores stereotypes of young people

10 March 2006

Does the popular image of young people as disengaged, disaffected and disorderly reflect reality or is it a stereotype perpetuated by the media? This issue, along with an examination of life in economically deprived areas, will be explored in a free public lecture at the University of Teesside.

The lecture, entitled Disconnected Youth? Popular myths, dangerous theories and mundane realities, will be delivered by Professor Rob MacDonald, from the School of Social Sciences & Law, on Wednesday 29 March, 6.30pm – 7.45pm at the Centuria Building, off Victoria Road, Middlesbrough.

Using extensive research carried out in Teesside’s ‘poor neighbourhoods’ Professor MacDonald will ask if young people really are disconnected from the social, economic and moral mainstream, or if popular representations and academic theories have failed to connect with the more mundane realities of growing up ‘poor’ in Britain.

This lecture will be of particular interest to young people, parents and those working with young people. There will be an opportunity to ask questions following the lecture.

Refreshments will be available from 6.00pm. Seats will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis and booking is advised. To find out more or to book a place, contact Sarah Jane Irving or Liz Lawrence on 01642 384255 or email alumni.office@tees.ac.uk.
