Huge success for sporting students

16 December 2009

Teesside’s sporting stars are continuing the University’s winning streak after clinching a string of honours at two prestigious events.

First year BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise (Applied Sport Science) student Louis Cunningham fought his way to a gold medal at the English Universities Boxing Championship.

He was also crowned Best Open Male Boxer and Best Boxer of the Tournament at the event, which was held on 12 and 13 December.

Louis, who fights at middleweight, said: ‘I’m absolutely over the moon, it’s a fantastic feeling to win so decisively and really satisfying to deliver performances which people think are so good after all the hard work and training I have put in.’

Starting as they mean to go on New members of the University’s Rowing Team are also celebrating after winning silver and bronze medals in Freshers’ events at the North East Indoor Rowing Championships.

Women’s Captain Rebecca Purchase won a bronze medal in the individual event, while Teesside Girls came second and picked up silver in the team event.

The performance was particularly impressive as the girls only started rowing for Teesside eight weeks ago after joining the club during Freshers’ Week.

Rebecca said: ‘We’re absolutely delighted to have had this success so early on as a team and let’s hope it’s the start of even bigger things to come, we definitely have the talent to win more titles.’
