Toni’s Double Celebration

28 November 2000

Toni Warnes will be enjoying double celebrations when she graduates from the University of Teesside today. Not only has she achieved a First Class BSc (Hons) degree from the School of Computing and Mathematics, but will also be awarded a prize from the Institute of Mathematics and Applications, for what was termed 'an outstanding performance on the final year'.

Toni, 22, from Roseberry Mount, Guisborough, said: “I am thrilled that I am receiving this award and am pleased that all the hard work I put into my Mathematics degree has been recognised. I was academically focussed throughout, achieving consistently good marks over four years.”

After leaving Bydales school in Marske, Toni went to Prior Pursglove Sixth form in Guisborough where she obtained four good A levels. Her grade A in maths helped influence her decision to study the subject and become a maths teacher. She is currently training to become a secondary school teacher, which has always been her ambition and she hopes to take up a teaching post in the local area.

Toni also completed a year’s placement with ICI Wilton’s Maths and Statistics Department. This primarily involved computer programming. Toni said: “This was a great learning opportunity where I could use my initiative.”

Toni said: “My mum and dad, Shirley and Peter are extremely proud of my achievements, particularly as I am the first member of the family to obtain a degree.”
