An Audience With will focus on perceptions of corruption

01 December 2011

Scandal and corruption will be in the spotlight during An Audience With Professor Michael Macaulay at Teesside University.

The Professor in Public Management at Teesside University Business School will present his free Audience With lecture from 5.00pm to 8.00pm on Thursday 8 December in the University’s Centuria building.

Professor Macaulay will examine how although there is nothing new about UK corruption in the public or private sector – there is something new about the way corruption is perceived and treated. Traditionally it’s seen as overt and illegal practices, such as bribery, vote rigging or bid collusion, but more recent revelations and scandals have thrown focus on to the concept of influence marketing – a more subtle, frequently legal way of accessing and harnessing political power and public money for private gain.

Professor Macaulay will chart the growth in how we understand influence marketing and will ask whether recent legislation, particularly the Bribery Act 2010, will effectively deal with this problem.

He said: 'The word corruption is currently synonymous with scandal, especially in light of continuing political, sporting and media troubles in 2011. We need a more helpful distinction between the two, while acknowledging the grey areas in between.'
