Teesside Sixth-Formers get the Chemistry right

09 May 2000

Local ‘A’ level students will explore the practical world of Chemistry tomorrow as part of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s (RSC) National Schools Analyst Competition. The Tees Valley Heat will be held on Wednesday 10 May from 1pm - 5.30pm in the Laboratory room, Eighth Floor, Main Tower Block, University of Teesside. There will be an opportunity to photograph the students at 4.45pm.

The National Competition has been organised by the RSC’s Analytical Division, and will present students from across the UK with an identical scientific problem, to be solved within an allocated time. The students will be judged on their ability to work in a team, problem solving methods, and other skills, such as information gathering and mathematical presentation. Lower sixth (aged 16-17) pupils from the following Schools and Colleges will take part in teams of three: Redcar & Cleveland College, Conyers School, Egglescliffe School, Prior Pursglove College, and MacMillan College. The winning team will go forward to the national final to be held at Herriot-Watt University in Edinburgh on 19 June.

The event has been sponsored by the RSC and organised by the Teesside Chemical Initiative Ltd’s (TCI) Science Education Unit, with the support of the University of Teesside’s staff.
