Ceremony of achievement for Teesside Secondary pupils

15 May 2000

Over 230 Year 9 (aged 13-14) Secondary School Children will receive Certificates of Achievement from the University of Teesside in a special ceremony on Wednesday 17 May, which will recognise their achievements in the Student Ambassador Scheme.

Launched last year with the support of Tees Valley TEC, the regional development agency One NorthEast, and the Single Regeneration Budget (SRB), the scheme involves 18 Teesside schools. Pupils have worked in groups of four or five with students from the University of Teesside and Durham University’s Stockton campus, who are known as Ambassadors. The 50 Ambassadors were involved in a range of learning activities with each group of pupils, showing that higher education is within their grasp. The Ambassadors will also receive Certificates of Achievement.

Professor Derek Fraser, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Teesside, will present the certificates, and the ceremony will also be attended by Jim Lewis, Vice-Principal at the University of Durham’s Stockton Campus, John Bennett, Chief Executive of Tees Valley TEC and Kate Brown, Assistant Principal of Teesside Tertiary College and Chair of Streets Ahead.

Following the presentation, pupils, Ambassadors and invited guests will enjoy a buffet and disco at Club One night-club in the University’s Students’ Union.
