University Festival of Fitness for Primary Children

13 January 2000

Over 140 Primary School children aged 7-11 from Nunthorpe Primary School, Middlesbrough, will visit the University of Teesside for a 'Festival of Sport' on Monday 17 January from 1.15-4.30pm. The children will be taking part in a wide range of sports, including mini-soccer, rugby, hockey, athletics, indoor cricket and fitness activities.

The festival has been organised by the University's School of Social Sciences, to give final year students on the BSc (Hons) Sport Science degree real experience of working with children. One of the Sport Science modules is called 'Coaching Children', and the students will provide all of the coaching during the afternoon.

Ian Renshaw, Module Leader for Coaching Children said: "The children will have a fun sporting afternoon and discover more about the University right on their doorstep. It will also give our students, many of whom are aiming for teaching careers, the opportunity to work with children."

There will be an opportunity to photograph the children at the University's tennis courts off Victoria Road,Middlesbrough, at 2.30pm on Monday 17 January. For more details contact Stephen Laing, Press & Public Relations, on 01642 342962, fax 01642 342930, e-mail S.Laing@tees.ac.uk
