The Community Informatics Research and Applications Unit (CIRA) at University of Teesside is helping the Hansard Society to run an ‘Online Consultation’ with MPs, who are anxious to learn about real experiences of the current benefit systems, tax credits and ‘welfare to work.’

The MPs on the Social Security Select Committee want to hear what people think are the problems with the current benefit system and how the take up of benefits could be improved as well as any other issues around childcare arrangements for working parents.

“This exciting new initiative will enable families to use the Internet to tell Parliament just what it is really like living on a low income,” says Steve Thompson, project officer with CIRA.

“Nobody needs to worry about computers, the most important thing is giving people a voice to tell Government about its policies,” he says.

Contributors can get free access to the Consultation web page (www.uspeak.org.uk) at a number of community locations around Teesside and at the Community Informatics Research and Applications Unit at University of Teesside.

For more information, contact Steve Thompson e-mail s.d.thompson@tees.ac.uk or telephone (01642) 342786.
