Katie studied psychology and counselling at Teesside before pursuing a master's in social work.
My placements really helped me to decide which field of social work I wanted to get into and it also provided me with excellent job prospects.
My course was varied – I had a mix of classroom-based theory and two work placements. This allowed me to complete practical work and gain first-hand experience putting theory into practice. I was really grateful to have received two local authority placements in children and adult social work teams.
I enjoyed all the modules and practical work. I had a great group of classmates – there were 13 of us and we all supported one another over some quite challenging times. The University staff were also supportive and always available to speak to during my placements if I needed them. This was really important as the two years of the course are quite intense, but it was made manageable through the support and learning how to manage my studying, placement and personal life.
I currently work for a local authority as a social worker in adult mental health. My placements really helped me to decide which field of social work I wanted to get into and it also provided me with excellent job prospects.
Yes, my time at Teesside University definitely helped me. I previously studied BSc (Hons) Psychology and Counselling, also at Teesside, and this provided me with extensive knowledge before going on to my master’s. I could not have secured my role as a social worker without completing the MA Social Work.
