Teesside University's first annual Athena Swan Townhall

School of Arts and Creative Industries

The School of Arts and Creative Industries (SACI) formed in 2020 and operates an ambitious and distinctive model within Teesside University, running creative courses, working internationally, partnering with industry, and incorporating the Arts Council (ACE) funded public venue Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA.)

SACI submits to REF Art & Design Unit of Assessment (U0A32), exemplifying a forward-looking approach to research, inclusive of practice-based and impact driven projects, including the diverse MIMA program. Athena Swan is hugely important to SACI as it both drives gender equality and recognises the good work that is already happening.

Athena Swan is truly important to the School of Arts and Creative Industries, and I look forward to seeing its progress

The importance of Athena Swan in SHLS

Athena Swan reflects the principles and values that are fundamental to SHLS, its staff and students. The vocational and applied nature of our taught programmes and applied research reflect the importance of our impactful work that enhances the lives of our academic community and the external populations that we serve. While the AS programme assesses key metrics, the embedding of its principles across the school is key and reflects our approach at all levels of the school structure.

We value the ethos that AS provides and embrace the opportunity to continually enhance equality and opportunity for all members of the school and externally with our partners.
