Course overview
You consider what it means to grow up around poverty, mental illness, addiction, domestic violence, neglect, imprisonment and abuse without the presence of a trusted adult.
Explore the steps taken to help children and young people:
- cope with insecure attachments, ACEs, adversity and trauma
- manage their emotions and behaviours
- improve their physical and mental health and wellbeing
- develop resilience to survive and thrive in their education and future.
If you are a teacher or work in a school and you want to develop your knowledge of how to work with children and young people who are growing up in difficult circumstances, this course is for you. The course is delivered outside of working hours to enable you to attend.

How you learn
The course is delivered face-to-face on our Teesside campus.
Teaching takes place over one semester – four hours a week in the evenings over 12 weeks. The course runs in semester two (January to May), within the standard start and end dates of the University.
The learning and teaching strategy consists of lectures and seminars to learn and apply key knowledge. You are expected to prepare materials for the seminars and share, debate and reflect on your work.
Formative feedback is given throughout in class-based activities, forums, group presentations and discussions.
How you are assessed
You complete a critical evaluation of a case study of a child or young person experiencing an adverse childhood. You suggest the impact of that childhood on their physical and mental health, learning, education and future, and recommend suitable interventions to manage and support them. You are also required to complete a reflection on how your completion of the case study influences your professional practice. You have at least two weeks after you finish the course to complete your assignments, supported by access to individual and group tutorials.
