Course overview
Initially the focus is on the basic skills for legal study, including the use and sourcing of legal materials, legal research and how to tackle legal questions. Students will go on to learn the fundamental processes of legal reasoning beginning with the doctrine of judicial precedent and followed by an examination of judicial approaches towards interpreting statute.
Summer university
Start date: Starts Monday 2 June, Mondays and Wednesdays for 4 weeks, 6.00-9.00pm
You can study up to 30 credits at Summer University and you can select up to three modules on the same application form. If you would like to add a module later, or change one of your choices, then please email summer.university@tees.ac.uk.

The English Legal System and legal study, including:
Academic writing and referencing / Tackling legal problems
Introduction to Legal Research - including introduction to relevant electronic resources/databases (e.g. Lexis, Westlaw)
Judicial approaches to statutory interpretation
Judicial operation of the doctrine of precedent
Law Reform
Legal Ethics
Morality and the law
Sources of Law
Terminology, definitions and categories of law
How you are assessed
Students will be required to submit a 1,000 word assignment which will be based on a case study containing two or more of the areas covered in seminars. Feedback will be provided in the standard format upon return of the material.
