Course overview
It is ideal for graduates wishing to teach their degree subject across a range of settings in the education and training sector.
This course is delivered full-time and part-time across a range of colleges in our Teesside University Collaborative Partnership. The full-time course is a pre-service award for those intending to teach in the sector and is offered at Darlington College and Stockton Riverside College. If you want to teach either adult literacy or numeracy, a full-time specialist route is available at Stockton Riverside College and Darlington College. The part-time award is offered at Darlington College, Hartlepool College of Further Education and Stockton Riverside College. The part-time course is available as an in-service award if you are currently employed in teaching or training in the sector. If you are not in a paid teaching post, a pre-service part-time route is available, but you must be able to find your own teaching practice.
Due to government changes, if you complete this award, you may also be able to gain employment in a secondary school setting, particularly in the post-14 age range - subject to the completion of Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS).This course has been developed to embed The Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers in Education and Training, and it combines academic study with substantial placement experience and observation of practice.
Both full-time and part-time routes cover a range of topics including planning and assessment, theories and principles for enabling learning, curriculum design and development plus being a professional in the sector. You study specialist modules if you choose to follow the literacy or numeracy subject-specialist programme. Your award title on qualification will also reflect your chosen specialist route rather than the generic award title. You also attend two full-day conferences alongside trainees from across the partnership.
Study this course and you may be eligible for a £2,500 Sir Keith Skeoch postgraduate scholarship.

How you learn
Learning and teaching are central to all aspects of this course. Trainees are themselves students completing a higher education qualification but they are also trainee teachers who are expected to apply the knowledge and skills they acquire to their own classrooms. All aspects of this course are therefore designed to support trainees to develop academically whilst also supporting the development of practical, professional expertise across a range of contexts.
This course is built around a clear focus on developing resilient, autonomous, reflective practitioners who will become outstanding teachers within the education and training sector. The learning and teaching strategy of this course supports that goal and aims to ensure that trainees:
- are introduced to a wide variety of innovative, inspiring and creative approaches to learning, teaching and assessment;
- take every opportunity to engage with research informed practice and to feel confident in evaluating educational research;
- experience the active modelling of L&T strategies within their taught sessions and that they consistently engage in the collaborative evaluation of modelled practice;
- develop a wide-ranging, independent and flexible approach to reflection, reflective practice and the linking of theory to practice;
- acquire the skills and knowledge required to meet the professional standards of the sector, understand the changes taking place within the sector and independently pursue their own continued personal and professional development; and,
- are made aware of current issues and changes within the education and training sector and contextualise these within education as a whole.
