The number of staff stating White Ethnicity has reduced by 139 positions from 1897 in 2023 to 1758 in 2024. The number of staff declaring themselves from an Ethnic Minority background has increased by 38 positions from 326 in 2023 to 364 in 2024. The number of staff unknown ethnicity has reduced by 2 position(s) from 23 in 2023 to 21 in 2024.
The percentage of staff from ethnic minority backgrounds has increased. There has been a year-on-year increase form 14.5% in 2023 to 17% in 2024. It is worth noting that Teesside University's ethnic minority staff profile is significantly above the 2021 census for the North East for people from ethnic minority backgrounds was at 6.9%.
Of those staff who identify as other than white British, 8.3% are Asian, and 1.6% of our ethnic minority staff identify as Chinese. The percentage of Black staff stands at 3.5% an increase of 2.4% since 2021. The number of staff from ethnic minority backgrounds is slightly below the HE sector benchmark which is 17.5%.

There was a slight decrease in the number of staff declaring they had a disability in 2024. 6.2% of University staff declared themselves as having a disability compared to 6.7% in 2023. Teesside has a slightly lower proportion of disabled staff than the HE sector benchmark at 6.8%.

In 2024, 3.1% declared themselves as Gay/Lesbian this is a slight increase by 0.3% from 2023. 78.4% declared themselves as Heterosexual in 2024. Staff refusing to declare their sexual orientation has reduced from 5.3% in 2023 to 5.1% in 2024. Sexual orientation of 10.7% of staff are not known, this figure is significantly lower than the benchmark figure of 41%.

Staff stating Christian as their religion has reduced by 21 positions from 781 in 2023 to 760 in 2024. Staff declaring themselves as Non-Christian has increased by 12 positions from 244 in 2023 to 256 in 2024. Staff stating No Religion has reduced by 37 positions from 824 in 2023 to 787 in 2024. The amount of staff with an unknown religion has reduced by 57 positions from 397 in 2023 to 340 in 2024. The not known figure for the university is 10.8% which is significantly below the benchmark figure of 41%.

There has been a change to the University's age profile since 2020. The 40 - 49 age group now represent the largest group of our staff population compared to 50 - 59 in 2020. The University continues to encourage applications from younger people.
