Why Teesside?

I was attracted by the current investment into the campus and its facilities – the Students’ Union, Library, the Curve and the Business School are really impressive.

Best thing about your course?

The course was well structured, interesting and engaging. There were smaller classes which was helpful for getting to know other students. The lecturers were interested in getting to know us on a personal level which helped us to grow our confidence in speaking out in class and getting involved in lectures. Some of the stand out lecturers were Mike Ashwell, Fred Hutchinson, John Peters and Dave Wall – we got to know them well which meant we had more discussion between us as a group which helped us learn more about each subject.

Favourite module?

Taxation with Alan Dodds and Law with John Peters. They were passionate and engaging and made me look forward to the lectures each week.

Did you undertake any work experience or placements?

I did a placement year at Cleveland Potash Limited, which was advertised through the University. I carried this on part-time around my studies and it gave me the platform for the career I have now. I firmly believe I would not be where I am now without that experience.

Tell us about your social life

The Students’ Union was great for a night out and also somewhere to go and relax, have lunch and play pool between lectures. I also played squash and went to the Gym in my spare time.

Did you use the Careers Service?

I used them to find and prepare for my placement year. The interview preparation was brilliant and helped me secure the role.

What have you done since graduating?

I’ve worked in a graduate role at Network Rail for the last two and a half years, travelling up and down the country. I’m also studying to become a chartered management accountant with the Chartered Institute of Management accountants. I’ve now passed 15 exams and have just one left before fully qualifying. I’ll then be looking for a permanent financial analyst or management accountant role within Network Rail.
