The course is really interesting, and I feel like I will be well prepared for my first job.
I had an interest in anatomy and physiology and the perioperative environment, so I explored possible careers and discovered ODP. I had experience of studying at Teesside, so I was delighted when they offered the ODP course and opportunity to attend placement at James Cook University Hospital.
I researched the role of an ODP and found that nationally there is a shortage, so graduate employment is fairly good and University placements can potentially lead to permanent employment.
It’s delivered well and is engaging, with opportunities to discuss and collaborate perspectives and theory. You learn about the technical remits of an ODP ranging from anaesthesia, scrub, circulating to recovery. Modules focussing on infection control, perioperative practice, anatomy and physiology and legal, ethical and professional concepts; directly link to placement practice, providing good insight and perspective into the role of an ODP. There is a great blend of theory and hands on practice.
The campus has been designed to make the campus heart central to university life it creates a safe, well-lit and aesthetically pleasing place to study. There are lots of facilities including the gym, Library and Students' Union, that provide great places to keep fit, study and socialise.
The campus is directly in the town centre, close to all the shops, restaurants, nightlife and transport links. The surrounding area has coastal towns like Redcar and Saltburn and countryside such as Roseberry Topping, which are worth a visit especially in the summer.
I successfully applied for a role as a student ambassador and I'm excited to get started.
I have recently been on anaesthetic and recovery placement at James Cook University Hospital. It’s been very informative and relates directly to my role as an aspiring ODP. The placements are very hands on and develop knowledge of the role and day-to-day duties. It’s a teaching hospital and staff have been more than willing to share knowledge of practice, creating collaborative environments that have enabled me to really focus on the theory and role of an ODP. I’m looking forward to my next placement focusing on circulating and scrub.
University enhances skills like time management, academic writing, and critical analysis. Placement develops an understanding of practical skills, roles, responsibilities, and duties of an ODP.
To work as an ODP, study a master’s and progress into roles such as anaesthesia associate, surgical care practitioner or advanced critical care practitioner. I also would love to utilise my PGCE to teach, helping keep my theory up to date and teach future generations of aspiring ODPs.
Yes, it’s a fantastic university with a great vibe and excellent student experience with facilities to achieve your potential. Staff are accommodating and supportive, helping with any issues and providing good delivery of the content. The cohort has a family vibe, and it’s nice to see everyone grow and develop as friends and one day fellow work colleagues.
Come to an open day, visit the facilities, and spend some time on campus. Visit the town centre, find the local travel links, visit the shops and restaurants, and enjoy what Middlesbrough has to offer.
