BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy*

I loved how hands on the course was straight away. We were practising on phantom heads within a matter of weeks and learning practical skills.

Why university and why Teesside?

I decided to go to university as I really enjoyed working with a dental therapist at my place of work and wanted to progress further myself. I chose Teesside because they were one of the only universities that accepted dental nursing as a qualification. It was also the closest university to my home and meant I didn’t have to relocate.

Best thing about your course?

I loved how hands on the course was straight away. We were practising on phantom heads within a matter of weeks and learning practical skills.

What do you think about the campus and the services?

The library is a lovely quiet space for learning and there are great facilities for group learning.

What do you think about Middlesbrough and the surrounding area?

Middlesbrough has loads of lovely places to eat, all within walking distance of the University. It’s also close to Saltburn, which is a lovely seaside town.

Any extracurricular activities?

I have helped with open days and potential student interviews. It’s lovely to see different people coming through the University.

Have you been on placement?

I was on placement in my third year in a practice in Middlesbrough. I attended every week and gained lots of experience working one on one with a mentor. I also worked as a dental nurse while studying.

What skills have you gained at Teesside that you feel will help you in your chosen career?

My degree is designed so I can work within dentistry once registered with the GDC. I have been given the opportunity to develop all the skills within a dental hygienist and dental therapists scope of practice. Sessions on the student dental facility allowed me to do this in a safe and well observed manner following phantom head sessions.

What have you done since graduating?

I am currently employed as a dental hygienist and a dental therapist in two different practices.

Would you recommend Teesside University and your course?

Yes, because the support is there for students. I would say to anyone thinking of coming here to study, to take the chance and apply.
