Alex studied BSc (Hons) Environmental Science with us and is now on the science and engineering graduate programme at EDF nuclear power station.
This course prepared me extremely well for my career, allowing me to explore a range of modules and gain insight into what work may look like in different industries.
I chose Teesside as it was local and the modules looked really interesting with a range of practical and theoretical learning. The international field trip really appealed to me as it provided the opportunity to experience how the environmental sector was viewed in a different culture. I chose environmental science as I felt it would provide the knowledge for me to make a difference.
This course prepared me extremely well for my career, allowing me to explore a range of modules and gain insight into what work may look like in different industries. The international field trip really benefited me as it pushed me outside my comfort zone. It also taught me the importance of taking detailed notes in the field, following up on them, and showing the importance of being aware of your surroundings, which is vital in my current role.
I’m based at EDF nuclear power station in Hartlepool as a science and engineering graduate. Currently, I'm working in the defueling preparations team, ensuring the station is ready for the next stage of its life cycle after generation stops. This involves looking at how plant functions will change, and what modifications need to be done to ensure that changes prioritise safety. Work packs I’ve completed include writing quality plans for engineering changes and writing facility characterisations. I've also looked into plant functionality, and its current and assumed future use, considering the waste types which exist on the plant, and whether existing disposal routes can be used.
I joined Sellafield Ltd as a graduate environmental advisor, where I worked on sewage treatment and water treatment plants for the site, conducting environmental investigations for site and external regulators. When the opportunity at EDF came about, I took it to move back closer to home.
My aspiration is to learn as much about the nuclear industry as possible, and transfer off the graduate scheme into a substantive role, potentially as a project engineer, specialising in the environmental aspects of projects. This may lead to further education in project management or a similar discipline.
It was really clean and modern, with new facilities being built. The library was well-equipped and the SU was a relaxed environment. There were plenty of social study places on campus which was handy for group activities.
I would due to the range of modules available and the practical experience gained through field trips. The importance of the international fieldtrip shouldn’t be underestimated for the experiences and benefits you gain.
