Nawal Miraj

Tell us why you decided to go to university and why you chose Teesside?

I chose to go to university because of my passion for study and desire to achieve my career goals. I chose Teesside University because it stands out for employability and level of research activity. It provides best teaching credibility for students and in my case its biomedical science degree is accredited with IBMS which will help me to get job after graduation.

Why did you choose your subject?

I chose to pursue an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science due to my curiosity and interest in science since childhood. This field covers a range of subjects, including immunology, pharmacology, genetics, pathology, and microbiology, making it a versatile choice. This degree allows one to explore various career opportunities in academics, healthcare, industry, and government institutions. Furthermore, this degree will equip me with the necessary skills to excel in the medical and research sectors, as the demand for this field is high in today's job market and is expected to continue to be so in the future.

What do you like most about your course and why? Are there any modules which you really enjoy?

I like this subject because of my desire to positively impact people's lives through my knowledge and skills, allowing me to better understand the human body. Among modules, I really enjoyed pathology last year, when we solved a patient's case by making a clinical diagnostic report about him by reading his medical history and symptoms. By doing so, I was experiencing a real hospital experience where a doctor's decision for the patient is based on the results of his tests, which a biomedical scientist predicts by performing different diagnostic tests.

What do you think about the campus and the services offered (Careers, Students’ Union, The Library)?

I think campus services provided by the university are great. Especially the library where you can study any time and get help from staff and wide variety of books, and journals. Different clubs, societies, and events at the Student’s Union help you build friendships with other students and allow you to learn about different cultures and traditions from around the world. Support services provided by Student Futures help us getting to know our future job sector. By attending career events, I have expanded my network.

Are you a member of any clubs or societies, a course rep or student ambassador?

I am Course Representative for Year Two BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree students. I chose to become a representative because it gives me an opportunity to be the voice of my class fellows and drive positive changes to create the best academic experience.

Do you have a part-time job or do any volunteering during your studies?

I volunteered with the Student’s Union Cultural Societies. I supported the Islamic Society, Pakistan Society, and India Society in various activities related to cultural events and festival celebrations.

What skills/experience have you gained at Teesside that you feel will help you in your chosen career?

I have gained the skills and experience needed for career development, including academic excellence and personal development to enhance employability skills. I have taken part in Student Future's workshops including CV writing, interview preparation, networking skills, and job search strategies, all of which will help me to get a job after graduation.

What are your ambitions for the future?

My ambition for the future is to become a research scientist to work on ground-breaking research projects to advance my understanding of diseases, develop new treatments, or improve diagnostic techniques.
