Make 13 March a day to remember

08 March 2002

Quitting smoking can be a difficult task for many people. As part of National No Smoking Day on Wednesday 13 March, the University of Teesside’s Student Services Department is organising a series of advice and support activities to help students and staff quit smoking this year. These will take place in the Clarendon Link Building, Student Centre (behind the Dickens Pub), between 12 noon-2pm and include:

Caroline Innes - Aromatherapist and Indian Head masseur. Caroline will offer free five-minute taster sessions for those who may need to combat stress associated with quitting smoking, or would simply like to be indulged.

The chance to ask questions and seek specialist advice about alternative strategies, such as aromatherapy and homeopathy. Information will be available about remedies that may help when stopping smoking.

An information display, quizzes and freebies.

Aline Marron, Student Health Advisor/Smoking Cessation Advisor at the University said: "No Smoking Day is an annual event designed to raise awareness about stopping smoking. About 120,000 UK smokers die each year from a smoking related disease - that's about 330 people each day. Events such as this have shown there are more attempts to quit on No Smoking Day than any other day. The University aims to support this year's campaign by actively raising awareness and offering support to students and staff throughout the campus."

Students and staff can also enter a national Quit and Win competition. A £5,000 prize is available, in addition to regional prizes of £1000 if you stop smoking on 13th March and stay stopped for four weeks.
