Keren, Ben and Geri scoop ice-cream success

27 June 2003

Keren Adams is truly queen of the cones, after scooping first prize of £1,000 in a national Ben & Jerry’s ice cream competition. Keren, 20, from Edinburgh, entered the competition during the final year of her BA (Hons) degree in Design Marketing at the Middlesbrough-based University of Teesside.

The competition was launched to celebrate Ben & Jerry's twenty-fifth anniversary, and required entrants to create a new way of promoting the company's free cone day. Keren's entry proposed customers receive a free ice cream in exchange for a donation to the UK children's helpline Childline.

She also suggested that a Ben & Jerry's bus toured Edinburgh on the free cone day, visiting prominent landmarks, including Bristol Square, The Mound and Fountain Park. Bus passengers would also include the likes of Hollywood star Ben Affleck and former spice girl Geri Halliwell. Only the internationally famous passengers would infact be look-alikes, as Keren's campaign described the bus carrying a range of famous Ben & Jerry (or Geri!) doppelgangers. Keren's entry came top out of 250 nationally as part of the YCN Design and Communication Awards.

Keren said: "I couldn't believe I won, it was really unexpected and a nice way to finish the degree. I wanted the bus to tour Edinburgh, so that Scotland's capital wasn't involved in the free cone day, and yes I DO like the ice cream! My favourite is Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. It would be brilliant if Ben and Jerry's used the campaign. I'm planning to use some of the £1,000 on a big shopping spree with my friends."

Keren is now aiming for a career in creative design or branding. She is the daughter of Douglas and Jackie Adams and a former pupil of Oxgangs Primary School, Craig Locker School and George Watson's College. At the latter she achieved Highers in Art & Design, Business Management, Geography, French and English.
