Local children learn screenwriting secrets

03 July 2003

The University of Teesside is hosting Green Lit, a weeklong free course from Monday 7 to Friday 11 July for local young people aged 15 – 18 to learn about the development of story ideas for the large and small screen. The group will then create a short film based on their own original screenplay by the end of the week.

Green Lit takes its name from the film industry term ‘green light’ meaning that a film will be made. It will be led by Gary Young, a professional writer whose new film Spivs has recently completed production starring Ken Stott (from TV’s The Vice), Nick Moran (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), Dominic Monoghan (The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Paul Kaye (formerly known as Dennis Pennis) and TV comedian Jack Dee.

The Drop, a World War Two film written by Gary, will go into production next year and stars Adrian Dunbar (The Crying Game), Gerry Butler (Tomb Raider II) and Ioan Gruffydd (TV’s Hornblower)

Joining Gary will be Angeline Ferguson of the Boilerhouse theatre company.

Local media are welcome to visit the Green Lit course on Monday 7 July at 3pm to interview Gary and Angeline, film/photograph the proceedings.

Gary Young will also be a lecturer on the new 20-week screenwriters course beginning at the University in September.
