Create Sounds 4 Screen

28 July 2003

The world of movie soundtracks and audio effects will be explored in a four-day course at the University of Teesside. The Sound 4 Screen course, held from Tuesday 26 - Friday 29 August from 10am - 4pm is free and is available for people aged 15 and over.

Held at the University’s Medialab, on Southfield Road, Middlesbrough, the course will explore the effects of different forms of music and show how they are used to enhance atmosphere and create tension. Sound effects will also be examined, from the everyday (footsteps, door slams) to the more exotic (gun shots, animal sounds).

The course will be led by Tom Cooke, a musician, composer, and music technology tutor from Tyne & Wear, and the students, using top range equipment, will finish the week with a CD of their work.

Wendy Sanderson, the University of Teesside’s Cultural & Creative Industries Development Co-ordinator, said: “Sound effects and music are an often overlooked part of the cinema experience, but who can forget the Jaws theme or the sound of a lightsabre? Anyone taking part in this course will have a lot of fun and learn about how to create sound for screen. Its great for people who make films at home, are considering a career in the industry or who have just sat at the cinema and wondered ‘How did they do that?’”

Places on Sound 4 Screen are limited. Contact Wendy Sanderson, University of Teesside Culture and Creative Industries on 01642384427 or email: w.sanderson@tees.ac.uk to request an application form.
