Chemistry at Work will show young people aged 14 – 15 years from 19 regional secondary schools a variety of real-life applications of science in the work place via presentations from industrial and University personnel. These will include presentations such as:
how to know whether the goods you buy are safe an examination of the materials used in Virgin Atlantic's hot air balloon the processes used to create aroma chemicals the chemistry of creating iron and steel products an obstacle course designed to be completed by the children using powered wheelchairs controlled explosions by Dr Cliff Ludman (always a favourite)
Leila Elliott, TCI Team Leader, said: “Thanks to the continuing support from the national sponsor RSC, local sponsor learn2work, the University of Teesside, local companies and many of the schools from our region, we are able to offer Chemistry at Work once again. Student, teacher and presenter feedback indicate how worthwhile they find the event. Company and Education personnel involved over the three days believe in investing in the development of the region's young people who may in the future consider a career in science related work.”
