New cutting edge sporting resource

02 May 2008

A new sport science consultancy is now available for the public, University students and staff.

Based in the Olympia Building on Victoria Road, it will help enhance performance in a range of sports and provides access to over 30 members of University staff who can offer their expertise in various specialist areas, such as Sports Psychology and Physiology.

Dr Peter Olsen, a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise is the consultancy’s Director. He said: ‘This is a cutting edge resource. We can undertake a needs analysis with athletes to assess what they require in terms of sport science support. Then we develop a sport specific package, which is holistic and includes vital components like nutrition.’

Tony Rees, 52, from Fairfield, Stockton-on-Tees is a triathlete and one of the Consultancy’s clients. Father-of-two Tony has trained as a triathlete for 25 years and represented the UK at European and World Championship level. Tony will next represent the UK in the world long course triathlons championships in the Netherlands. He has also taken part in the long distance ‘Iron Man’ triathlons five times.

Tony is also Chair of the Hartlepool triathletes and said: ‘Being a triathlete is a lifestyle for me, I train every day. The consultancy has given me data for the first time, information about my performance that I’ve never had before. I can plot my progress and receive invaluable advice through my regular contact with the team, seeing them every six weeks. These are professional sport scientists with a lot of knowledge and the laboratory has every bit of equipment that you can possibly need.’

Costs vary depending on the services required. For more information contact Dr Olsen on 01642 384267, e-mail p.olsen@tees.ac.uk or Darren Paul, call 01642 342310, email d.paul@tees.ac.uk.
