Sporting physiotherapist wins top prize

08 February 2001

Keen sportsman Mark Newman was presented with one of the top School of Health awards when he graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy from the University of Teesside.

Mark, 22, from Blackheath, Colchester, Essex, won the C.H.Lamballe Memorial Prize at the University’s Academic Awards Ceremony in Middlesbrough Town Hall for his performance on the three-year full-time course.

Now working as a junior rotational physiotherapist with Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust, Mark said he thoroughly enjoyed the course, particularly the clinical placements with local hospitals in Stockton, Darlington, Redcar and Northallerton.

“I am also very impressed with the University’s new School of Health building and its high-tech facilities,” said Mark, who is the son of Vivien and Peter Newman of Blackheath, Colchester, Essex, and a former pupil of St Benedicts RC College and Colchester Sixth Form College.

Apart from enjoying his studies, Mark also took part in the Great North Run for charity last year and was a member of the University of Teesside’s football club. He now plays soccer for Bures United, a Suffolk-based football team hoping to match the success of local premiership side, Ipswich Town.
