Teesside University London opened at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Newham, East London, in 2023 and is already playing a key role supporting the growth of skills and aspirations within the local community.

As part of this mission, it recently hosted the East London Careers Hub Annual conference, a workshop with Olympian volleyball player, Peter Bakare, as well as sponsorship of the 32 Borough Cup which saw 200 young people visit campus.

Teesside University London sponsored four teams, Hackney Wick FC, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest, at the 32 Borough Cup, which is an annual pan-London event organised by Bobby Kasanga, of Think Outside the Blox and Hackney Wick FC.

Ahead of the tournament, the London campus hosted a careers day aimed at encouraging the young people to consider their career options if they are not successful in professional football.

Bobby said: “This was a great two days of education, football, and friendship. A special thanks to Teesside University London for hosting us on the workshop day.”

The careers day built upon a long-standing relationship between Teesside University London and Bobby Kasanga which has seen the University sponsor Hackney Wick FC and its players visits the Middlesbrough campus.

Alongside this, the University has also hosted London 2012 Olympian, Peter Bakare to share his story on how he represented Team GB playing volleyball and to help inspire the next generation.

We are delighted to have hosted these inspiring events over the last month and we look to build on the local links we have developed to support young people in their next steps.

Around 30 students from the Bobby Moore Academy, based on the Olympic Park, took part in the workshop with the East London campus to enable them to think about and achieve their goals.

The creative, practical, and fun workshop gave the students the tools to reach their personal best and step outside of their comfort zone.

Teesside University London is already planning future collaboration with Peter and hopes to invite more young people to campus to take part in animation workshops with Peter and the University’s own animation experts.

The annual East London Careers Hub conference saw almost 150 careers professionals and enterprise advisors from schools and colleges in East and South East London visit the campus to network and learn how best to advise and guide young people to take their next steps.

There was also an awards ceremony to recognise outstanding work in the careers field, as well as a marketplace with around 20 employers and educational institutions for information gathering and networking.

Kathryn Elliott, Head of Partnerships and Business Development at TU London: “We are delighted to have hosted these inspiring events over the last month and we look to build on the local links we have developed to support young people in their next steps.”
