Why Teesside University?

University offers a structured environment to develop academically, acquire specialised skills and enhance your career development. Teesside University stood out due to its reputation for academic excellence, strong industry connections, and a curriculum designed to be contemporary and relevant to the job market. Additionally, Teesside's supportive services and commitment to diversity made it an ideal choice for my higher education.

Why Primary Education?

I wanted to support young children as I believe the formative years of education are very important for future development. I was inspired to become a teacher by my former primary teachers having benefited from their good tutorship. PGCE primary education offered the best structure to prepare me for a bright career as a primary teacher.

What was your highlight of the course?

The blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application. The modules are designed to be engaging and offer practical placement experience to train on the job while receiving constructive feedback through observations from tutors and mentors. I enjoyed the module “Enhancing Learning and Teaching”, as it provided hands-on experience and deep dives into the holistic concept of primary education spanning from the policies, national curriculum, quality assurance and the media.

How did you find the campus?

Teesside University's campus is modern and well-equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The library is an excellent resource, offering a vast collection of materials and a conducive environment for study. The careers service is incredibly supportive, providing guidance and opportunities to enhance employability. The Students’ Union offers a vibrant community and various activities that enrich the student experience. I joined the English Cafe, where I have had the opportunity to engage with peers who share similar interests and participate in various enriching activities. This allowed me to find other students from my native country and socialise with them as well.

What are the differences between studying in Ghana compared to studying in the UK?

The UK education system emphasises independent learning and critical thinking, which has been both challenging and rewarding. The multicultural environment at Teesside University has also provided a broader perspective on global issues.

Did you enjoy your placements?

I enrolled on two professional placements as part of my course totalling 120 days, which provided invaluable hands-on experience and insights into the best teaching practices. They enhanced my practical skills in providing quality first teaching based on a broad and balanced curriculum to meet the needs of different pupils in a classroom.

What does the future hold for you?

My ambitions for the future include becoming a research-led primary teacher, aiming to make significant contributions to primary educational system in my home country, Ghana using the skills gained at Teesside.

Would you recommend Teesside?

I wholeheartedly recommend Teesside University and my course. The quality of education, supportive faculty, and comprehensive student services provide an excellent foundation for academic and professional success.

Any advice for prospective UK and International students?

I advise taking full advantage of the resources and opportunities available. Engage with the academic community, seek out internships, and embrace the diverse cultural environment of Middlesbrough. I chose to study in the UK for its prestigious education system, renowned for fostering innovation and critical thinking. For prospective international students, I recommend being open to new experiences and actively participating in university life.

Tell us about your sponsorship for international students

I was fortunate enough to secure one of 20 primary jobs with sponsorship available for international students in London at Cooks Spinney Academy. I will be taking over as full class teacher for a very diverse and enthusiastic year 2 class. I look forward to working with other experience teachers and providing quality first teaching to young pupils to help them develop their fullest potential. It has been a very exciting journey for me, and I thank all my tutors for the amazing support and mentoring I received from Teesside University and my placement schools. I just cannot wait to start my first teaching experience as a newly qualified teacher in September.
