How to apply

You can apply online for a research degree at any time; our enrolment dates for new research degree students are in October, December, March and May.

To apply for a research degree you will need to:

  • Develop a research proposal and submit a personal statement and training document.
  • Identify a supervisor through our research portal and include their name on your research proposal.

Please note that although you may express a preference to commence studies at a particular entry point, your actual date of entry will not be confirmed until you receive an Unconditional Offer. The next available entry point may be later than your preference.

Writing your application

The research proposal is a key element of your application. It will give us an indication of your ability to undertake PGR study, assess the potential of the project and importantly whether we have sufficient expertise to provide supervision. The proposal will also be helpful for further developing the research.

A proposal should be:

  • At least 500 words minimum
  • Clear and concise and outline the research you wish to undertake.

A template is provided for your proposal that is broken down into the most important aspects of research aims and design. Submit your proposal using the research proposal template, which you should upload into your online application form.

You will also need to upload details of any experience you have of research training and a personal statement about why you want to do a research degree.

In addition, you will also need to upload any other supplementary documents such as English test results, references or funding confirmation letters.

Applications won't be accepted if the templates aren't used.
