Student update

Your January student update

We hope you had a great winter break and managed to find some downtime. As we head towards the start of Semester 2, we have lots of activities, advice and tips to help support your mental wellbeing at university. And some events you won’t want to miss!

Support for exams

It’s not uncommon to feel worried or under pressure during exam periods. But the good news is, there’s lots you can do to prepare and deal with the stress you might be feeling. Speak to the team in the Student Life Building if you need support with your mental wellbeing before or after your exams – and check out their guidance on preparing for exams. The team are available until the end of this exam period, Friday 20 January.

Mental wellbeing workshop

10.00am - 1.00pm, Thursday 19 January (CL2.50)

Our mental wellbeing workshop develops your awareness of the signs of low mood, anxiety and stress, and teaches you ways to improve and manage your own wellbeing. It will help you make links between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours – and help you look at things from a healthier perspective. Email Louise at the link below to book.

Getting enough sleep?

2.00pm - 3.30pm, Wednesday 18 January (SLB Lounge)

If the answer is no, this interactive session can help. We’ll look at sleep issues and solutions that can reduce the stress and anxiety around getting to sleep.

We’ll provide you with knowledge and ideas on how you can improve your sleep to be more productive in life, work and your studies. No need to book.

6.30pm - 8.30pm, Wednesday 25 January (SU Hub)

Rugby legend Rory Underwood holds the record of 49 tries for England and won seven caps for the British Lions. But he’s also amassed 3,000 flying hours with the RAF and set up his own consultancy business.

Gym memberships on sale now

Is getting more exercise one of your New Year’s resolutions?

Our Semester 2 gym memberships are now on sale and cost just £40 per semester.

With your sports membership, you have unlimited use of the gym, fitness classes, squash courts and sports hall.

Don't forget, if you were a member last semester, you’ll need to sign up again.

Cycle to uni

Cycling has so many benefits – regular exercise, the chance to spend time outdoors and lower commuting costs. Plus, it’s better for the environment, too. If you cycle to uni, there are excellent facilities on campus, including secure storage facilities, lockers and showers.

Make sure to lock your bike away securely using our storage and ideally use D locks.

Health and performance hub

The new health and performance hub on campus offers health and sports performance testing free to all students. Led by sport and exercise students and staff, the clinic offers access to blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, body composition and cardiovascular fitness levels. And if you’re into sport, it offers assessments for running and cycling performance, too!

Storyfest 2023 competition

Storyfest is an annual storytelling contest, where you could win an expedition to Iceland! The competition highlights the voices of students, giving you the chance to explore your own ideas for how to best care for the earth. They want stories about the people, ideas and innovations that can move the world toward a greener future. The competition is open now and closes on Monday 6 February 2023.
