Teesside Sport we want to support and inspire a healthier, happier you. We’ve got a great range of sports facilities, a first class gym and fitness classes for beginners to regular gym goers.

The Gym

Putting health and well-being at the heart of the Middlesbrough campus and University life, this attractive, high-quality facility for staff and students provides:

  • state-of-the-art equipment
  • sprint track, free weights areas, cardio and resistance equipment and flexible studio spaces
  • fitness studio
  • open and staffed 7 days a week

Opening times

Last admission is 1 hour before closing.

  • Monday - Friday: 7.15am - 9.00pm
  • Saturday: 9.00am - 5.00pm
  • Sunday: 12.00pm - 8.00pm

Closed bank holidays and university Christmas vacation period.

For non-members a casual payment option is available for each use of the gym and sports facilities.


Fitness timetable and class details

Bodyweight strength

Bodyweight strength is a form of exercise that uses body weight for resistance. It includes movements like push-ups, pull-ups, and squats. This workout style improves strength, flexibility, and endurance, and can be done anywhere. Bodyweight strength is versatile, efficient, and suitable for all fitness levels, promoting functional fitness and body control.

Circuits

Wednesday

This class starts with a mobilising warm-up and modified version of the higher intensity movements within the classes’ different stations. The exercises are a mix of core, strength, and low-impact cardio. The stations each have two exercises which the participants alternate between for the two minutes they spend on the station. You can work with a partner or by yourself. It is a fun way to learn new movements, meet people and get fit!

Friday

Preprogrammed interval training exercise class incorporating cardiovascular, resistance, core training elements. Be prepared to be surprised each week with something new.

Core conditioning

A Core Conditioning class focuses on strengthening the core muscles through exercises like planks, crunches, and leg lifts. This class enhances core stability, posture, and overall strength, improving both athletic performance and everyday movement.

Core stability

It is rolling around on an inflatable ball to work your core muscles, legs and upper body. An unexpected laugh and fun way to exercise. The effects do not always kick-in until the next day, but you will leave the class with a smile on your face and an interesting tale to relay back to friends.

Group cycling

A fun and fast paced, high-intensity indoor cycling class to upbeat and motivating tunes. performed on a stationary bike incorporating interval, pyramid, hill climb and sprint training.

HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)

A HIIT class combines high-intensity exercises like sprints, squats, and burpees with brief rest periods. It's a fast-paced, full-body workout designed to improve fitness, burn calories, and build strength.

MetaFit

MetaFit is a high‑intensity bodyweight workout designed to boost your fitness fast. Each session combines short, powerful intervals with functional movements that challenge strength, stamina, and agility. MetaFit focuses on simple, effective exercises that push you to your personal best. Expect a fast‑paced, full‑body workout that fires up your metabolism, improves cardiovascular fitness, and continues burning calories long after you leave the studio. Every class is coached with clear cues, scalable options, and motivating energy - making it ideal for anyone who wants maximum results in minimum time.

Pilates

A mat-based exercise class to strengthen and lengthen the muscles, improve posture and overall well-being. Pilates will help to improve your body awareness by teaching you correct bodily alignment, posture and breathing.

Yoga

Yoga is an ancient practice that combines the mind and body through physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation yoga can also build strength and flexibility, and reduce stress.

Zumba

A dance-based fitness class that combines elements of salsa, samba, merengue, reggaeton and hip-hop with cardio exercise moves to create a fast-paced workout. You do not need to be any good at dancing to do Zumba — all you need is an open mindset and a willingness to give it your best shot. A Zumba class will teach you various dance fitness moves throughout the exercise session. Many of the steps will be repeated alongside different songs played throughout the class, so you will start picking up the moves quickly.

How to join

Students

Student membership is taken out per semester. Although this means you need to renew each semester, it offers a flexible approach rather than committing to a full year’s membership.

  • Semester 1 membership £40. Purchase from 15 September 2025 - 18 January 2026
  • Semester 2 membership £40. Purchase from 5 January 2026 - 17 May 2026 (Not available to students whose courses finish in Semester 2 2026)
  • Summer membership £40. Purchase from 18 May 2026 - 13 September 2026 (Not available to students who graduate in 2026)

Sign up online (students)

Staff

Staff membership is £120 per year (Payroll deduction £10 per month).

Staff membership can be taken out at any time and cancelled at any time, email sport@tees.ac.uk.

Staff can join the gym by completing the attached Payroll deduction and Health Commitment Statement and emailing it to sport@tees.ac.uk

Alumni

Teesside Sport is pleased to offer a graduate sports membership for recent graduates of Teesside University. Alumni membership is £150 per year, paid in one instalment.

The membership is open to those individuals who have graduated at any time within the last two calendar years. After this time the membership is no longer available.

To gain membership you must report to the Olympia reception desk with an Alumni TUSC card as proof of graduate status, which is available through the university Alumni Library membership once you have completed the online form.

Purchase and payment of Alumni Sports Membership can only be made in-person at the Olympia reception desk with your Alumni TUSC Card presented to staff.

Please note that the benefit is only available to alumni who have officially graduated (your official graduation ceremony date has passed) until this point you do not hold alumni status.

Casual use

Pay as you play for each activity or access to the gym is available as and when you take part:

  • only available to Teesside University staff and students
  • card payment required at Olympia reception
  • £3.50 per session for students
  • £4.50 per session for staff


Forms

All new members must complete a Health Commitment Statement before using the facilities. If you join online you will be prompted to do this. Those paying by card for casual use or staff paying by direct debit need to complete one at reception. When taking out membership you must complete an online induction prior to using the facilities for the first time. If you're using the climbing wall facilities you are required to book an induction session with an instructor first before you can book and use the wall facilities.
