Here are some of our most popular questions asked by students. If you have a question that's not answered here, contact your Personal Tutor.

1. Who is my Personal Tutor?

Your Personal Tutor is an academic member of staff who will contact you at the beginning of your course and arrange a meeting to introduce themselves. Your tutor is your key academic point of contact at the university, who will help guide you through your university journey.

2. When will I first meet my Personal tutor?

You'll be informed about your Personal Tutor within a week of starting your course. New students will meet their tutor either during induction week or within the first three weeks of starting their course.

While returning students will have their first session within the first three weeks. Some of your sessions may be group-based but one-to-one support is also available.

3. How does my tutor support me?

Your tutor is a named academic contact who you can talk to about your academic, personal and professional development.

  • Starting at University: Your tutor will help you transition into university life and support you throughout your studies.
  • Pastoral care: They'll be part of a wider network of support within your School and the University, guiding you to specialised services when needed.
  • Academic support: Your tutor will help you understand feedback and provide general advice to help you excel in your studies.
  • Career planning: They'll also discuss your work-related experiences to assist with your career planning and can link you to Student Futures.

4. Why might I need to talk to my tutor?

You can talk to your tutor if you are worried about assessment feedback, have personal matters you think are affecting your studies or simply just being available for a chat about how you're progressing. Your tutor will either be able to help you themselves or will signpost you to our support services. This can include Student Support Services, Student Futures and the Library.

5. What to ask at Personal Tutor Meeting?

You can discuss academic and personal issues with your Personal Tutor, especially if you feel your circumstances are impacting your studies or experience at University. Your Personal Tutor will be able to direct you to the appropriate support within the University to help you further.

6. How do I make the most of tutoring at university?

To get the best out of your tutoring relationship, you should attend all scheduled meetings, check your e-mails regularly and make sure you complete any actions your tutor suggests.

7. What happens if my Personal Tutor changes roles?

If you have an issue with Personal Tutoring, such as not being able to contact your allocated Personal Tutor, please contact your academic school.

8. What if I feel very distressed and I can't contact my tutor?

The University has a range of support services to help you with personal and wellbeing issues. You can discuss any issues with your tutor, who will be able to signpost you to support.

9. How we use StREAM to support you?

Ongoing support: Your tutor will use information about you, as appropriate, such as engagement data from StREAM and Records of Progress, to tailor their support to your needs. They'll schedule meetings flexibly and record all interactions in StREAM so you can keep track of discussions and actions.

StREAM is your educational fitness app. It helps you track and monitor your learning, generating an engagement rating that shows how you're doing and what you could do to improve. This tool creates a personalised view of your learning habits and serves as a conversation starter with your Personal Tutor.
