Don't worry if you've been asked to attend a meeting with your personal tutor (and don't know what to expect!). These top tips and preparation template below will help you to plan for it and get the most out of the time.
Top Tips
Some important things to do and remember before you attend are:
- Be clear on the purpose of the meeting: if you have requested the meeting, be sure to view the What to expect on what your personal tutor can support with, to ensure the time spent is productive. Make some brief notes before the meeting on what you would like to talk about and take them with you on the day, or use the preparation template.
- Confirm the purpose with your Personal Tutor before the meeting: previous students have found that a short email to a Personal Tutor before meeting them, outlining the topics they would like to discuss and any other relevant information, has been helpful. This could include any reasonable adjustments to your meeting that you would like your Personal Tutor to consider, such as where you prefer to meet or any additional access needs you may have.
- Be solutions-focused: while your Personal Tutor will do their best to support you, they may not be able to offer the information or advice you need straightaway. If you raise a problem or concern, it may assist them if you can describe what you feel may help or what a satisfactory resolution to the issue discussed might look like to you.
- Check your attendance and engagement score on Stream - it's good to know these values beforehand, and also to keep an eye on them throughout your course. Low scores and values can indicate negative progress with your studies and your tutor will also be checking these regularly. Your Stream profile can be found within the 'MyTU' app.
During my sessions, we go through what is due and when breaking down large tasks into smaller, manageable tasks and making a timetable or to-do lists. This helps me to feel like I can manage what is expected of me and helps to reduce my anxiety.
