Teesside University is partnering with Cleveland Police to offer the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCTA). The programme has enhanced recruitment preparation, improved staff retention, and created a more competent police workforce.
Cleveland Police sought to enhance their workforce's education and training to align with national standards and other public sectors. The force needed a programme that provided recruits with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience to ensure they were well-prepared for their roles. The aim was to create a more educated, skilled, and dedicated police force.
Cleveland Police partnered with Teesside University to enrol recruits in the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCTA). This programme allowed new recruits, such as Police Constable Lily Halford, to study for a degree while gaining on-the-job experience. Teesside University won the contract through a robust procurement process, establishing a strategic partnership that focused on delivering high-quality education tailored to policing needs.
The apprenticeship programme has significantly benefited Cleveland Police. Recruits gained comprehensive knowledge and practical skills, enhancing their effectiveness in the field. The support network from both the workplace and the university ensured recruits felt valued and motivated. Detective Chief Inspector Joan Downs highlighted that this collaboration has strengthened the force, improved staff retention, and created a more competent and committed workforce. The partnership with Teesside University has proven instrumental in advancing the training and development of Cleveland Police officers.
